Floods in southern Morocco kill at least 18 as roads, homes and services are hit
Floods triggered by torrential rains in southern Morocco have killed at least 18 people and left four others missing, according to authorities cited by Arab News.
The deaths were reported across the southern provinces of Tata, Tiznit, Errachidia, Tinghir and Taroudant after floods swamped villages over the weekend. The authorities said the dead included three foreign nationals from Spain, Canada and Peru. The disaster also destroyed 56 homes and damaged 110 roads, while disrupting electricity, water supply and phone networks.
The scale of the damage reflects how unusual the rainfall was for regions that are normally far drier. The source packet says Morocco’s interior ministry spokesman, Rachid Khalfi, described the precipitation recorded in two days as equal to what the affected regions normally receive over an entire year. That estimate helps explain why even local flood controls were overwhelmed so quickly.
The floods hit communities that were already under pressure from prolonged drought. Arab News reported that the southern areas affected had been suffering from water stress for years, and that the country had entered a period of severe drought with dam levels well below normal. The sudden rain therefore struck terrain and infrastructure that were not built to absorb such volumes of water in such a short time.
The report also points to a broader weather pattern. Officials said the rains were associated with an extremely unstable tropical air mass that formed violent clouds and produced exceptionally heavy rainfall. The Moroccan weather service cited 47 millimeters of rain in Ouarzazate in three hours and about 170 millimeters near Tagounite, close to the Algerian border.
For residents, the immediate damage was practical as well as lethal. Roads were cut, utilities were disrupted and entire villages were submerged. Those conditions make rescue and recovery more difficult, especially in scattered rural areas where access is already limited.
The evidence packet does not provide a final disaster response tally beyond the missing persons report and infrastructure damage, but it does support one clear conclusion: this was a severe flood event with cross-border human loss, major material damage and a strong warning about the vulnerability of arid regions to short, intense rainstorms.
Southern Morocco’s flood emergency also fits a pattern increasingly seen in dry climate zones, where long drought periods can be interrupted by sudden, destructive rain. When that happens, the ground often cannot absorb water fast enough, increasing runoff and the risk of flash flooding. In this case, the result was deadly.
Authorities were still assessing the full toll as the aftermath continued to unfold.
