# Glasgow set to host a scaled-down 2026 Commonwealth Games after government backing
Glasgow has been confirmed as the host city for the 2026 Commonwealth Games after the Scottish government backed a reduced version of the event, ending months of uncertainty over where the competition would take place. The event date on the record is 2024-09-17, but the host-city decision concerns the 2026 Games.
The BBC report says the plan is for a smaller, more sustainable Commonwealth Games than the edition Glasgow staged in 2014. Instead of the full-scale version seen in earlier years, the 2026 Games are expected to feature 10 sports across four venues. Athletics and swimming remain compulsory and are slated for Scotstoun Stadium and Tollcross International Swimming Centre, while the remaining venue choices and final schedule have not yet been announced.
The decision follows the withdrawal of Victoria, the Australian state originally selected to host the event, after rising costs made the project unworkable. Commonwealth Games Australia later provided what the BBC describes as a multi-million pound contribution to help finalise the Glasgow deal. The report also says the total budget is expected to be about £114 million.
Officials in Scotland are presenting the arrangement as financially contained. Organisers say the Games will come at no cost to the public purse, with funding drawn from compensation paid to the Commonwealth Games Federation after Victoria stepped away. The UK government is not underwriting the whole event, though it would provide support if security costs rose unexpectedly.
The reaction from officials and sporting figures is framed around both opportunity and caution. Neil Gray called it a very different Commonwealth Games, while CGF president Chris Jenkins said the Glasgow plan could help reset the competition around a sustainable model. Commonwealth Games Scotland chairman Ian Reid said the city’s existing venues, workforce and supply chain make it one of the few places able to deliver on time.
There is still some uncertainty around the final sporting program. The BBC notes that no athlete village is planned and opening and closing ceremonies are likely to be scaled back. The report also says it is not yet clear which sports will be removed from the programme.
Even with those gaps, the decision marks a major turn for a sporting event that has struggled to find hosts in recent years. Glasgow, which last staged the Games in 2014, is now being positioned as the city that can keep the Commonwealth Games alive in a leaner form.
