# Lebanese football matches postponed indefinitely as war escalates

On 2024-09-24, the Lebanese Football Association said it was postponing all domestic football matches indefinitely as Israel's attacks on southern Lebanon intensified and fears of a wider war grew. The decision covered every tournament under the association's umbrella and effectively froze the country's football calendar.

The announcement came after the first round of the Lebanese Premier League had already been played four days earlier. Match day two had been scheduled for 2024-09-27 to 2024-09-29, but the association said the current situation left no room to continue. The statement made clear that the postponement would last until a later date to be determined.

The broader human toll was severe. According to Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health, at least 558 people, including 50 children, had been killed and 1,835 wounded in the bombardment that began on Friday. UNHCR said tens of thousands of people had been forced from their homes and that the number continued to rise. Football was therefore one more public institution adjusting to a conflict that had already spilled far beyond the battlefield.

Lebanon was not the only country in the region where football had been affected. The report noted that domestic football in Palestine also remained suspended during Israel's continuing war in Gaza, which began after the October 7 attacks in southern Israel. The Palestinian Professional League's last game had been played on October 6, and the men's national team continued to play international fixtures abroad.

The source also placed the Lebanese decision beside the wider sporting toll of the war. The Palestine Football Association said at least 410 athletes, sports officials or coaches had been killed in Gaza as of August, including 297 footballers and 84 children. That statistic shows how quickly war can hollow out an entire sporting system, not just cancel one weekend of matches.

Lebanese football had only just reopened the domestic season, and the shutdown therefore hit at the moment when clubs and fans might normally have been settling in. Yet the public-safety logic was obvious: when displacement is rising and war is spreading, even stadium schedules become secondary. The association did not present the move as symbolic or temporary. It was an indefinite halt.

International football in Lebanon was already sparse in the coming months. The report said the country was not scheduled to host any international fixtures and had last hosted a home game on 2024-12-28, when the men's national team played Jordan in a friendly match. Their next two friendlies, against India on 2024-10-12 and Vietnam on 2024-10-15, were slated to be held in Vietnam.

The postponement leaves clubs, players and supporters waiting for a return date that the federation did not give. In the short term, though, the message was unmistakable: the war has moved so close to daily life that even football cannot continue as if nothing is happening.
