SpaceX advanced its Starship development program with an uncrewed fifth flight test that achieved two separate recovery objectives. The company brought the Super Heavy first stage back to its launch tower in Texas, where mechanical arms secured the descending booster, while the Starship upper stage continued through space and later reached its intended splashdown area in the Indian Ocean.

The vehicle lifted off at 8:25 a.m. Eastern Time from SpaceX's Starbase site near Brownsville. Almost seven minutes later, Super Heavy returned to the same tower used for launch. The successful capture marked the first time SpaceX had completed this maneuver with the booster, which rises more than 20 stories.

The catch was designed as a controlled decision rather than an automatic outcome regardless of conditions. SpaceX said thousands of requirements covering the rocket and ground systems had to be satisfied before the attempt could proceed. Had those checks failed, the booster would have been directed toward a water landing in the Gulf of Mexico. The company said engineers prepared for years, tested for months and devoted tens of thousands of work hours to the supporting infrastructure.

Starship separated from Super Heavy and flew roughly halfway around Earth before atmospheric reentry. Its planned Indian Ocean splashdown completed the flight, and no people were aboard. SpaceX's leadership has said the vehicle is expected to make hundreds of missions before carrying a crew.

The flight extended a test campaign that began with four earlier launches: two in 2023, followed by missions in March and June 2024. SpaceX has used the successive flights to pursue additional milestones and incorporate lessons into later vehicles. Returning the booster to the tower is central to its plan for a fully reusable transportation system capable of carrying cargo and, eventually, people beyond Earth.

The scale of the hardware makes the tower catch particularly demanding. Fully assembled, Starship and Super Heavy stand 397 feet tall and about 30 feet wide. The 232-foot booster uses 33 Raptor engines, which collectively generate 16.7 million pounds of thrust. The 165-foot spacecraft carries six Raptor engines, split between atmospheric and vacuum operation. Both stages use liquid oxygen and liquid methane, with the full system requiring more than 10 million pounds of propellant.

The program also has a major role in NASA's Artemis plans. SpaceX holds a multibillion-dollar agreement to develop Starship as a crewed lunar lander, making continued testing relevant to the agency's effort to return astronauts to the Moon. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson publicly congratulated the company after the flight and linked further testing to preparations for future Artemis missions.

The Federal Aviation Administration granted the mission's launch license the day before liftoff, earlier than the regulator had previously estimated. SpaceX had sought to conduct the flight sooner and criticized the time required for environmental reviews. The completed test nevertheless moved the vehicle closer to the rapid reuse model that the company considers fundamental to Starship's intended operations.
