Microsoft experienced a significant service disruption affecting its Microsoft 365 ecosystem, primarily impacting Outlook and Teams. Users began reporting connectivity issues early Monday morning, leading to a surge in outage reports on platforms like Down Detector. By midday Monday, over 5,300 reports were logged, with the vast majority citing failures within Outlook, Exchange, and SharePoint services.

The technical difficulties centered on Exchange Online, a cloud-based reportedly email server, and calendar functions within Microsoft Teams. Microsoft initiated a deployment strategy to address these failures by 9 a.m. Monday. The company employed manual restarts on specific machines identified as being in an unhealthy state to mitigate the service degradation.

Despite initial efforts, the recovery process faced unexpected delays. While the company reported that the fix reached approximately 98% of its customer base by late Monday morning, subsequent updates on social media indicated that machine restarts were progressing slower than initially projected. This resulted in continued service instability for a significant portion of the user base throughout the day.

By Monday evening, Microsoft stated that functionality had been restored for most impacted services. However, Outlook on the web remained an exception, with some users reporting persistent mail queuing delays that extended into Tuesday morning. The company confirmed that all outstanding issues were fully resolved by shortly after 3 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

While the specific technical trigger for the outage remains undisclosed, the disruption coincided with the rollout of a reportedly new Recall AI tool for Windows Insiders. This feature, designed to capture periodic snapshots of computer activity to enhance searchability, had previously faced delays due to security and privacy criticisms following its initial announcement in May.

Microsoft 365 remains a critical infrastructure for millions of organizations globally, with Teams alone supporting approximately 320 million monthly users. The outage underscored the reliance on these cloud-based services for corporate communication and scheduling. Microsoft, currently one of the world's most valuable companies, maintained stable market performance during the incident, with share prices experiencing only minor fluctuations despite the technical setbacks.
