The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) halted an engine combustion test for its Epsilon S rocket on Tuesday following a fire that broke out at the Tanegashima Space Center. The incident occurred shortly after the test reportedly began at 8:30 a.m. reportedly local time, prompting an immediate suspension of the trial as the agency began assessing the situation.

Footage broadcast by NHK captured flames and smoke rising reportedly from the site on the southern island. Journalists stationed approximately 600 meters to one kilometer away reported hearing a large explosion roughly 30 seconds after the combustion test commenced. Reports from the Sankei Shimbun indicated that orange flames emerged from the engine on a horizontal platform before the blast.

Local authorities and fire departments reported no injuries resulting from the incident. The site, located in the remote Kagoshima region, remained under investigation by JAXA officials to determine the specific cause of the abnormality. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed the government's commitment to a thorough investigation and the development of flagship rockets.

The Epsilon S is a next-generation solid-fuel small rocket developed in partnership with the aerospace unit of IHI Corp. The program is considered vital for Japan’s independence in space development. Following the fire, shares in IHI Corp experienced a decline of up to 6 percent during trading sessions in Tokyo on Tuesday.

This event is the latest in a series of challenges for Japan’s space program. Previous setbacks include a failed Epsilon S engine test in July 2023 and the loss of the sixth Epsilon rocket in 2022. These incidents have previously necessitated lengthy investigations that delayed national missions and satellite launch schedules.

Industry analysts note that the timeline for the Epsilon S debut has become increasingly uncertain. While the agency had aimed for a launch by March 2025, reports from the Asahi Shimbun suggest that such a goal is now practically impossible. The agency continues to face pressure from the rise of international commercial launch providers.

Despite these difficulties, JAXA has seen success with its larger H3 flagship rocket. After a failed initial launch last year, the H3 system has completed three successful flights this year, including missions for commercial clients. The agency remains focused on building cost-competitive rockets to maintain its standing in the global space sector.
