Iran said it had placed its heaviest payload to date into space with the domestically developed Simorgh rocket, marking another claimed advance for the country's aerospace program. State media reported that the payload weighed about 300 kilograms (660 pounds) and comprised a telecommunications satellite and a space tug.
According to those reports, the payload entered an elliptical orbit with a low point of 300 kilometres and a high point of 410 kilometres (255 miles). The launch took place from the Imam Khomeini Spaceport in the rural province of Semnan. There was no immediate independent confirmation that the mission had succeeded, making the result a claim by Iranian authorities rather than an externally verified outcome.
The launch vehicle was the Simorgh, a two-stage carrier powered by liquid fuel. Developed by Iran's Defense Ministry, the rocket had experienced a number of unsuccessful launches before this mission. The reported 300-kilogram deployment therefore represented both a payload record claimed by Tehran and an important test of a system with a mixed flight history.
Iran had already announced several satellite missions during 2024. In January, it said a Simorgh rocket had launched three satellites at the same time for the first such domestic operation. In September, Iran reported that the Ghaem-100 rocket had delivered the Chamran-1 research satellite into an orbit 550 kilometres (340 miles) above Earth. Taken together, the missions reflected the pace at which Tehran was seeking to build experience with different launch vehicles and payloads.
The space program has also remained a point of dispute between Iran and Western governments. The United States, Israel and European governments have repeatedly objected to Tehran's work on satellite and launch technology. They argue that capabilities developed for spaceflight can also contribute to ballistic-missile systems, including missiles potentially able to carry nuclear warheads.
Iran rejects that assessment of its intentions. It says it is not seeking nuclear weapons and describes both its space work and nuclear activities as civilian programs. The differing positions form the political backdrop to the Simorgh flight, but they do not settle the mission's technical result.
On the evidence available for the event, Iranian state media supplied detailed orbital figures and a payload mass, while outside verification was absent. The reported launch nevertheless added to a sequence of Iranian satellite operations during the year and highlighted the Simorgh's role in the country's expanding launch effort.
Because the launch was not independently verified, the payload mass, orbital dimensions and success of deployment all remained dependent on Iranian reporting. The mission's significance was therefore clearer as a claimed advance in domestic launch capability than as a fully confirmed technical result.
