Scientists described Alpkarakush kyrgyzicus as the first Jurassic theropod discovered in Central Asia west of China, adding evidence from a region that had left a substantial gap in the fossil record of predatory dinosaurs. The new species was found in Kyrgyzstan and placed on a distant branch of the lineage that also produced Tyrannosaurus rex.
Alpkarakush carried a distinctive projection above the eye on its postorbital bone. Researchers recovered material from two individuals. The larger animal measured about 26 feet, or 8 meters, and weighed more than 2,500 pounds, equivalent to 1,250 kilograms. A second specimen was estimated to be 15% to 20% smaller.
The association of the two skeletons led the research team to consider whether they represented an adult and its offspring. The scientists proposed that juveniles may have remained with older animals into the early subadult stage, but the relationship was presented as an interpretation rather than a demonstrated family link.
Excavation took place in a mountainous desert area near Tashkumyr. Work began in 2006 and continued until 2023 because the remains were locked into a sharply inclined slope. Of the pair, the larger skeleton was comparatively complete, preserving nearly all of the hind limbs along with parts of the skull and vertebral column.
Growth marks in the bones gave the researchers a way to estimate age. Their analysis indicated that the larger individual was itself a subadult of at least 17 years, while the smaller dinosaur was a juvenile. Those findings provided information about development in addition to establishing the anatomy of the species.
The Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society published the research in accessible form. Lead author Oliver Rauhut, a curator at Germany’s Bavarian State Collection for Palaeontology and Geology, said the discovery contributed to understanding theropod evolution and geographic distribution. Its location was central to that significance: previously known Jurassic theropod material had left Central Asia poorly represented.
The project also made digital resources available beyond the physical specimens. Three-dimensional models of every recovered Alpkarakush bone were placed online so researchers elsewhere could examine the material or produce 3D prints. Study author Oliver Wings, director of the Natural History Museum Bamberg, highlighted that access as a route to further research.
The evidence supports the formal identification of a new species, the measurements of the two specimens and the team’s age estimates. The proposed adult-young association remains a hypothesis. Together, the fossils broaden the documented range of Jurassic theropods and create a shared digital record for scientists unable to study the Kyrgyz material in person.
