# Bangkok hotel fire kills three foreign tourists near Khao San Road
A fire at a hotel near Bangkok’s Khao San Road killed three foreign tourists and injured several others, Thai police said on 2024-12-30.
Police said the blaze broke out on the fifth floor of the six-story Ember Hotel on Sunday night. One person was found dead at the scene and two others died after being taken to hospital. Authorities later identified the dead as a Brazilian woman, a Ukrainian man, and an American man. Five other people were hospitalized, including a Japanese woman who was reported in critical condition.
Seventy-five people were staying at the hotel when the fire started, according to police. The incident happened in one of Bangkok’s best-known backpacker districts, an area that draws large numbers of tourists and is known for its nightlife, street activity, and dense hotel and guesthouse traffic. That made the blaze especially alarming as the Thai capital moved toward New Year’s celebrations.
Investigators have not yet said what caused the fire. Police said the flames were contained, but the building was left damaged and forensic teams were sent in to examine the site. Photos from the scene showed broken windows, firefighters at work, and police standing guard outside the hotel the following day.
Witnesses described the urgency of the rescue effort. An Indian tourist who saw the response told AP that firefighters broke glass in an effort to reach people trapped inside. Bangkok’s business and city leaders were quick to stress that safety plans remained in place as holiday crowds prepared for New Year’s Eve events. The Khao San Road Business Association said about 20,000 people were expected at a countdown event the next night, and that police and district staff had been mobilized for security.
The fire is a reminder of how quickly a routine tourist stay can turn deadly in a crowded urban district. Hotels in areas like Khao San Road operate amid heavy foot traffic, late-night activity, and a constant flow of visitors, which can make emergency response both more urgent and more complex.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt also emphasized safety following the incident, underscoring the need for reassurance as Bangkok prepared to host one of the city’s biggest annual celebrations. For the families of the dead and the people hospitalized, however, the focus was already on the human toll: three visitors killed, several more injured, and an investigation still looking for answers.
