Two privately built lunar landers left Earth on the same SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, beginning separate American and Japanese missions to the Moon. At 01:09 local time, corresponding to 06:09 GMT, the rocket departed Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.
The spacecraft belonged to Firefly Aerospace of the United States and Japan's ispace. Their shared launch was a rideshare arrangement: after reaching lunar orbit, the landers were expected to separate and pursue independent exploration programmes rather than operate as one mission.
Firefly's lander, Blue Ghost, was projected to need about 45 days to reach the Moon after separating from the SpaceX rocket. Its planned surface work included drilling, collecting samples and obtaining X-ray images of Earth's magnetic field. SpaceX said the measurements were intended to support research for future human lunar missions and improve understanding of how space weather affects Earth.
Ispace's Resilience lander was taking a slower route, with a journey of as long as five months before its planned landing. Once on the surface, it was expected to deploy a rover for local exploration and attempt to collect regolith, the loose material covering the Moon.
NASA supported the undertaking. If the delivery succeeded, it would represent the agency's largest commercial shipment to the lunar surface at that point. The launch joined a growing series of missions in which private companies develop and operate hardware for lunar exploration, often with government backing or scientific payloads.
Commercial landing remained a difficult benchmark. In the previous year, Intuitive Machines became the first private company to place a lander on the Moon. Before that achievement, successful lunar landings had been limited to national programmes from the United States, Soviet Union, China, India and Japan. Blue Ghost and Resilience still faced lengthy journeys and the hazards of descent before either could add to that record.
Although the two landers shared a launch vehicle, their different travel times and experiment plans illustrated how a single rocket can support distinct lunar projects. Blue Ghost's programme emphasised drilling, sampling and measurements related to Earth's magnetic environment. Resilience was designed to place a small rover on the surface and handle lunar soil.
The Falcon 9 departure occurred as SpaceX prepared another major flight. Its seventh orbital test of the Starship rocket was scheduled to launch from Texas at 16:00 local time, or 22:00 GMT. That separate test was not part of the lunar rideshare. For the Moon missions, launch was only the opening milestone; both companies still needed to navigate, enter the appropriate lunar trajectories and complete landings before beginning their planned surface work.
