Residents in Glendale told reporters they were dealing with sludge, sewage seepage and unsafe wells. One family of 10 was rushed to treatment after showing symptoms on December 26, 2024. Those accounts suggest the outbreak is already affecting everyday life at the household level, where people have little control over water quality.

The government says it has started some countermeasures. Deputy health minister Sleiman Timios Kwidini visited Mazowe district, and the report says authorities have partnered with other organizations to drill two boreholes in Glendale. Officials also said some local wells may still be used if water purification tablets are distributed and residents boil water before drinking it.

The response, however, is still short of a durable fix. The report makes clear that the broader problem is the collapse of water infrastructure in towns and cities, including the capital Harare, where raw sewage has reportedly entered water sources. That means the outbreak is tied to an ongoing governance and maintenance failure rather than a one-off contamination event.

Public health specialist Kudzai Masunda is quoted in the report saying that improved hygiene and better water and sanitation in both urban and rural areas are essential to eliminating cholera. The report also notes that vaccines can reduce incidence for several years, but only while longer-term water and sanitation improvements are carried out.

That combination of short-term containment and long-term infrastructure repair is the main policy challenge. Cholera can be treated, and outbreaks can be slowed, but without reliable water systems the disease tends to return. Zimbabwe's latest outbreak shows exactly why.
