Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten won the Australian Open men's doubles championship after recovering from a marathon first set against Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. They lost the first set 6–7 after a 16–18 tiebreak, took the second 7–6 with a 7–5 tiebreak, then won the decider 6–3.

The sixth-seeded Finnish-British team completed the three-hour, four-minute final at 1:42 a.m. in Melbourne, adding the title to the Wimbledon crown they had captured six months earlier. They had partnered for only nine months, making two major victories in that period a rapid ascent among the leading teams in men's doubles.

Bolelli and Vavassori saved 10 set points during an 87-minute opener. Its 34-point tiebreak ended when Bolelli produced a forceful backhand return and then a forehand winner, giving the third-seeded Italians a lead that could easily have decided such an even match.

The second set produced only one early break point before another tiebreak. This time, Patten and Heliövaara took their opportunity: Patten's ace created set point at 6–5 and Bolelli's following forehand missed, sending the match to a decider.

Momentum shifted more clearly in the third set. Heliövaara hit a winning return as the Italians lost serve and fell behind 2–0. The champions protected that advantage until the final game, when Patten faced two break points. He erased the first with an ace, survived the second after Bolelli's forehand went long, and sealed the title with another ace.

The victory continued an unusual trajectory for both players. Heliövaara, 35, had stepped away from professional tennis between 2013 and 2017 amid injuries and health problems. Patten, 28, did not immediately turn professional after college in the United States. They played the 2024 Australian Open with different partners and both exited in the second round.

Their partnership began with a title in Marrakech and quickly developed into a successful pairing grounded, both players said, in friendship away from competition. Patten became the third British man this century, this century to collect more than one men's doubles major; Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury had done so earlier. Heliövaara became the first Finnish player to do so.

For Bolelli and Vavassori, the defeat was a third loss in a Grand Slam final as a team. Vavassori also questioned scheduling the doubles final after the women's singles championship, arguing that the late finish and near-empty arena limited the audience for a match of exceptional quality.

The Italians had also lost the 2024 Australian Open final, and Bolelli was seeking a second Melbourne title a decade after winning there with Fabio Fognini. Their resistance in the first two sets made the champions' eventual control of the decider more significant: Heliövaara and Patten did not face a break point in that set until they served for the championship.
