The asteroid is estimated to be approximately 177 feet, or 54 meters, in diameter. Scientists categorize this object as a potential threat capable of localized destruction if an impact were to occur. Estimates suggest such an event could release roughly 8 megatons of energy, which exceeds the force generated by historical atomic detonations.

To better understand the risk, researchers utilize the Torino Scale, where 2024 YR4 is currently assigned a level 3 rating. This classification indicates a level of concern that exceeds the 1% probability threshold. Consequently, the object remains under active observation by planetary defense experts who prioritize monitoring space rocks that cross this specific threshold.

Emergency observation time has been secured on the James Webb Space Telescope to conduct a detailed analysis of the asteroid. Scientists intend to use this advanced instrumentation to determine the object's precise dimensions and orbital path. Historical trends in asteroid tracking suggest that initial risk assessments often decrease as tracking duration increases. Many objects previously identified on risk lists have eventually had their impact probabilities downgraded to 0% once more precise orbital measurements were obtained. Scientists anticipate that additional data will likely follow this established pattern.

If the asteroid were to maintain its current trajectory, NASA has identified a potential risk corridor. This path stretches across various regions, including parts of the eastern Pacific Ocean, reportedly northern South America, the reportedly Atlantic Ocean, Africa, the Arabian Sea, and South Asia. However, there is also a minor 0.3% chance the object could strike the moon instead of Earth.

Despite the current calculations, there remains a 96.9% probability that the asteroid will bypass Earth entirely. The scientific community continues to prioritize gathering further empirical evidence to ensure a more accurate assessment of the asteroid's path through space in the coming years.
