Brisbane, Australia, March 8, 2025 - Flooding rains battered Australia’s east coast after Cyclone Alfred weakened into a tropical low, leaving one person dead, several injured and large areas without power.

The storm had been expected to become the first cyclone to cross near Brisbane since 1974, but it lost strength before making that kind of landfall. Even so, its remnants crossed the coast north of the city and kept moving west, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning that locally heavy to intense rainfall could trigger flash and riverine flooding.

The confirmed fatality was a 61-year-old man whose body was recovered after he disappeared in a flooded river near Dorrigo in New South Wales. The report also said 13 defense personnel were injured when two military trucks rolled over during emergency operations in the same state. One vehicle left the road and rolled into a paddock, while the other tipped over while swerving to avoid a collision.

The damage spread far beyond isolated accidents. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said 330,000 homes and businesses lost power since Thursday, the largest blackout in the state’s history. New South Wales reported as many as 45,000 premises without electricity, though tens of thousands had been reconnected by late Saturday. The storm also left homes, beaches and holiday apartments damaged along the coast.

Officials said the weather system was now more about rain than wind. That shift mattered, but it did not make the danger disappear. Flood rescues were still under way in northern New South Wales, where police said teams carried out 36 rescues in recent days, many involving vehicles trying to cross floodwaters. The military injuries added another layer to a disaster already stretching state emergency services.

Cyclones are common in Queensland’s tropical north but far less frequent in the densely populated southeast. That rarity is part of why Alfred drew so much attention. Its weakened form still delivered the kind of prolonged rainfall that can be devastating in low-lying and flood-prone areas, even when the strongest winds never arrive.

The event left a familiar Australian disaster pattern in its wake: a storm that did not fully reach its worst-case cyclone scenario, but still produced a deadly mix of floodwater, infrastructure damage and long recovery work.

The storm’s financial impact was already visible in the blackout totals and the damage to coastal property. Trees, roofs, signs and marine infrastructure were all affected, showing how a system that lost some wind strength can still do serious harm when it meets dense settlement and exposed coastlines.

The episode also highlighted the challenge for emergency planners in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales. These regions are more accustomed to tropical-north cyclone planning than to sustained cyclone impact this far south. Once Alfred weakened, the risk shifted from wind shelters and evacuation from storm surge to flood response, utility restoration and rescue of people caught on roads and in floodwater.

Even with the weaker classification, the storm still exposed the vulnerability of coastal infrastructure and transport corridors. Those systems are built to absorb seasonal weather, but the report showed that prolonged rain can hit harder than short bursts of wind. That is why authorities focused so heavily on flash flooding and river flooding rather than the cyclone label itself.

The injuries to civilians and defense personnel also showed how disaster response can create new hazards of its own. Emergency trucking, road closures and flooded crossings turned the response effort into another risk environment, which is often how weather emergencies become prolonged public-safety incidents rather than simple storms.
