# Brazil police say they thwarted bomb plot targeting Lady Gaga concert in Rio

Brazilian police said they disrupted a bomb plot aimed at Lady Gaga’s free concert on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, where more than two million people gathered.

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro state, working with the justice ministry, said the suspects were recruiting participants to carry out attacks using improvised explosives. Police said the plan was intended to win notoriety on social media and was linked to a group promoting hate speech and the radicalisation of teenagers.

According to the report, the person described as responsible for the plan and a teenager were arrested. The alleged mastermind was detained for illegal possession of a firearm in Rio Grande do Sul, while the teenager was held in Rio for storing images of child sexual abuse. Police also said the group had been spreading hate speech, mainly against children, adolescents and the LGBTQ+ community.

Lady Gaga’s team said they learned about the threat only from media reports the next morning and that there had been no known safety concerns during the show. The report said no warning had been passed to Gaga or her team before or during the concert.

The event itself was already massive. The concert was free and drew a crowd of more than two million people. Rio city officials had paid for the show in part to help revive the local economy, expecting a large tourism boost. Police said 5,000 officers were deployed, and attendees passed through metal detectors while drones and facial recognition cameras were used.

The case is striking not only because of the scale of the planned crowd attack but because of the online ecosystem around it. Police said the group was using coded language and extremist symbolism in online spaces that encouraged violence among teenagers.

The justice ministry said the suspects identified themselves as Lady Gaga fans, known as “Little Monsters”. That detail, along with the reported use of social-media notoriety as a motivation, suggests a mixture of fandom identity, extremism and performative violence.

For a concert that was meant to be a celebration, the police account turns it into a story about how public events can become targets for online radicalisation.
