Kosmos 482, a Soviet spacecraft stranded in Earth orbit for more than half a century, re-entered the atmosphere. European tracking organizations concluded that the object had come down after it disappeared from later predicted orbits and failed to pass over a German radar station.

Russia said the spacecraft descended over the Indian Ocean. Independent trackers had not immediately established a precise location, however, and US Space Command was still analyzing orbital data on Saturday morning. It was also unknown how much of the spacecraft survived the heat and forces of re-entry.

Kosmos 482 launched in 1972 as part of a series of Soviet missions intended for Venus. A rocket malfunction prevented it from escaping Earth orbit. Much of the vehicle returned to Earth within roughly a decade, but its spherical landing capsule remained aloft as its orbit slowly decayed. The final object was estimated to be about one meter wide and to weigh more than 495 kilograms.

The lander drew unusual attention because it was built for a descent through the atmosphere of Venus, the hottest planet in the Solar System. Its titanium enclosure led experts to believe that some or possibly all of it might endure passage through Earth’s atmosphere. That distinguished Kosmos 482 from many pieces of orbital debris that are expected to burn up during descent.

Even so, scientists assessed the chance of debris striking a person as extremely low. Trackers could not predict the time and place of impact precisely in advance because the spacecraft was uncontrolled. Solar activity, which alters atmospheric drag, added uncertainty, as did the condition of hardware exposed to space since the early 1970s.

The European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking agency confirmed re-entry through orbital analysis and the absence of the craft on subsequent passes. The European Space Agency’s debris office reached the same conclusion after the expected target did not appear in radar observations. Unlike controlled disposals, which can direct aging spacecraft toward remote stretches of ocean, Kosmos 482 had no active flight-control system guiding its descent. The event ended a 53-year orbital afterlife created by a failed interplanetary mission, while uncertainty about the exact impact point meant the reported Indian Ocean location remained an official Russian assessment rather than an independently confirmed recovery site. No debris recovery was reported in the evidence.
