# Three girls injured in Pirkkala school stabbing as police probe manifesto claims
Police say a 16-year-old boy was detained within minutes after a stabbing at a school in Pirkkala left three girls under 15 injured.
The attack at Vähäjärvi School in Tampere’s Pirkkala region has quickly become one of Finland’s most disturbing school-violence cases in recent memory. Yle reported that officers were alerted at 10.42am on Tuesday morning and that the suspected perpetrator, who police confirmed is a pupil at the school, was taken into custody about eight minutes later. The victims were all girls under the age of 15.
Police said the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening. Yle added that one girl was reportedly stabbed in the neck, another in the hand and a third in the waist, though those locations had not been officially confirmed by police at the time of the report. The speed of the response suggests the school and police were able to intervene quickly, but the incident still left a community trying to understand what motivated such an attack.
A key part of the investigation is the suspect’s alleged online material. Yle said it had seen a manifesto that appeared to describe a plan to use a knife, target female pupils and carry out something “significant” and “exciting” in order to go to prison for a few years. The manifesto also allegedly claimed the suspect had no friends and had planned the act for around six months, using ChatGPT as an aid. Police, however, have not verified the manifesto’s authorship and have been careful not to treat social-media material as conclusive evidence.
That caution matters. Detective Inspector Jari Kinnunen said the police were investigating the case as attempted murder, but that the charge could change as the inquiry progresses. He also said police had not yet confirmed the authenticity of the manifesto or videos circulating online that purported to show the attack. Detective Inspector Petri Kollanen said the suspect was identified and detained within minutes and offered no resistance when approached.
The response extended well beyond law enforcement. Crisis support was offered to pupils and families, and the Pirkanmaa regional welfare authority said it would help parents discuss the events with their children. Education Minister Anders Adlercreutz and Social Security Minister Sanni Grahn-Laasonen condemned the violence, while Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said the episode raised urgent questions about how to prevent young people from carrying knives.
The broader challenge is obvious even without knowing the full motive. A school stabbing forces institutions to deal at once with trauma, online claims, juvenile justice and public anxiety about weapons in schools. In this case, police have moved quickly, but the harder work now lies in determining what was real in the suspect’s alleged material, what was performative, and what warning signs may have been missed.
