# Indonesia arrests 285 in two-month drug crackdown and seizes over half a ton of narcotics

Indonesian authorities say they arrested 285 people suspected of drug trafficking and seized 683,885 grams of narcotics during a two-month crackdown that stretched across 20 provinces.

The National Narcotic Agency said the operation, conducted from April through June, also uncovered money-laundering schemes linked to two drug syndicates and led to the confiscation of assets worth more than 26 billion rupiah, or about $1.5 million.

Officials said the 285 suspects included 29 women and seven foreign nationals. Those foreigners were identified as an American, two Kazakhs, two Malaysians, an Indian and an Australian. Thirty-six suspects, including 21 women, were presented to reporters in orange prison uniforms and handcuffs alongside the seized drugs.

The agency’s head, Marthinus Hukom, said the women arrested were mostly married and without jobs outside the home. He also said the larger crackdown reflected the scale of the drug problem in Indonesia, where strict laws coexist with a major trafficking market.

One deputy, Budi Wibowo, said the seized narcotics included crystal meth, marijuana, ecstasy, THC, hashish and amphetamines. He said the haul prevented the drugs from reaching more than 1.3 million people.

The operation also showed how traffickers move narcotics through a range of channels. Officials said syndicates used land transport, sea transport and mail services to distribute drugs.

Indonesia remains a key drug-smuggling hub in Southeast Asia despite some of the region’s harshest penalties. Convicted smugglers can face execution by firing squad, and the government says it is under constant pressure from international trafficking networks.

The crackdown came amid a broader trend of heavier enforcement. Authorities in Riau Islands separately exposed two drug-smuggling cases in May and seized 2.7 tons of crystal methamphetamine and 1.2 tons of ketamine, Hukom said.

Officials also pointed to rising seizure totals in recent years. In 2023, they said investigators uncovered more than 52,000 drug cases and seized 6.2 tons of crystal meth, 1.1 tons of marijuana and other synthetic narcotics. In 2024, that rose to more than 56,000 cases, with authorities confiscating 7.5 tons of crystal meth and 3.3 tons of marijuana.

The Ministry of Security Affairs said the value of narcotics seized in 2024 reached 7.5 trillion rupiah, or about $454.6 million. By November 2024, authorities had arrested 27,357 drug suspects.

The government’s latest announcement also comes as Indonesia continues to prosecute foreign nationals in high-profile drug cases. Earlier this month, three British nationals accused of smuggling nearly a kilogram of cocaine into the country were charged in Bali and faced the possibility of a death sentence.

For Indonesia, the June operation is another example of a strategy focused on interdiction, publicity and deterrence. The public display of suspects and seized drugs is designed to show both the scale of the crackdown and the government’s willingness to use strong enforcement tools.

Whether that approach changes the underlying market remains unresolved. But the latest numbers suggest the drug trade remains widespread enough to require repeated operations across the archipelago.
