Flash floods caused by torrential monsoon rain have killed at least three people and left at least a dozen missing in India’s Himachal Pradesh state, according to officials quoted by AP.

The flooding hit the Kangra area near Dharamshala on 2025-06-26 after water levels rose suddenly and swept away people and vehicles. AP reported that local authorities launched a rescue operation to find those missing. A state government update said at least eight people were missing in Kangra and three more in nearby Kullu. The dead included three people from one family whose home was buried in a mudslide in Guwahati, according to the AP story, while at least five people died in one mudslide-related incident in Assam’s capital.

The flood response also had to account for stranded visitors. AP said officials evacuated about 50 tourists to safer places. In Kangra, a lawmaker said 15 to 20 workers were swept away after water rose around a temporary shed near a hydroelectric power project. That detail matters because it shows how the flood affected both travelers and workers in the same storm system.

The AP report described the weather as a familiar monsoon hazard but one that remains difficult to manage. Landslides and flash floods are common in the Himalayan states during the rainy season, and critics have long linked the severity of such disasters to deforestation and construction tied to infrastructure and hydropower expansion. The report did not make that an unqualified finding, but it did note that environmental accountability and preparedness remain recurring issues in these states.

The immediate challenge is still rescue. AP reported that local officials had not provided a full death breakdown beyond confirming three fatalities, and the exact number of missing people could still change as teams search landslide sites and flood channels. The broad picture, however, is already clear: a fast-moving monsoon event in mountainous terrain swept away lives, blocked roads and stranded travelers.

The story also fits a wider seasonal pattern. Heavy rain and flash flooding are not unusual in northern India, but the speed with which a cloudburst can turn a roadside settlement, temporary shelter or tourist route into a mass-casualty scene remains a major public-safety problem. With roads blocked and water levels rising, rescue teams often have little room to maneuver.

In Himachal Pradesh, the flood has once again exposed the region’s vulnerability to sudden rainfall, unstable slopes and the heavy use of mountain corridors for tourism and power projects. AP’s account shows a disaster that was both local and regional: local because it hit specific towns and work sites, regional because the monsoon system has become part of a much wider seasonal pattern of deadly flooding in South Asia.
