# Somerset coach overturns on return from school trip, killing child and injuring 21

A child has died and 21 passengers were taken to hospital after a coach carrying school pupils overturned on a steep bank near Wheddon Cross in Somerset.
Police said the vehicle had been bringing pupils back from an end-of-term trip when it flipped onto its roof and slid down a bank near Cutcombe Hill. The coach was carrying about 70 people, many of them pupils from Minehead Middle School. Officials said two children were seriously injured, while many other passengers suffered minor injuries or escaped physical harm.
Avon and Somerset Police declared a major incident and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Police said the coach had overturned and slid about 20 feet down an embankment. Emergency crews faced the difficult task of freeing trapped passengers from the vehicle, with three air ambulances and more than 20 road ambulances dispatched to the scene.
The South West Ambulance Service confirmed that one child was pronounced dead at the scene. Ch Supt Mark Edgington described the day as truly tragic and said the community would be utterly devastated. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said there were no adequate words to acknowledge the death of a child and offered support to the families and emergency responders.
The school community was left confronting the immediate consequences. Beacon Education, which the school is part of, said its entire community was devastated and that it would support pupils, staff and families. Ridlers, the coach company, confirmed that its 70-seater vehicle was involved and said it was liaising with the school and emergency services to understand what happened.
The route appears to have been a routine return journey from Exmoor Zoo, but it ended in one of the worst school-transport accidents in the area in recent memory. Witnesses described the scene as horrendous. Local residents said the road is steep and exposed, with no barriers along that stretch.
The incident raises immediate questions about road safety, vehicle stability and how the coach came to leave the carriageway. Police have asked witnesses to come forward, and the investigation will likely focus on the condition of the road, the speed of the coach and the sequence of events before the rollover.
For the families involved, however, the details of any inquiry come after the central loss: one child dead, two seriously injured, and dozens of schoolchildren and adults shaken by a crash that unfolded in front of them on a summer afternoon. The emergency response was large, fast and decisive, but the human impact will last much longer than the rescue operation.
