A total lunar eclipse occurred on the date of 2025-09-07, giving sky-watchers in a broad swath of the world the chance to see the full Moon darken and take on a red colour as it moved through Earth’s shadow.
The event was visible in parts of the UK on Sunday evening, subject to local weather and the timing of moonrise. According to BBC News, the total phase began at 18:30 and ended at 19:52, with the eclipse reaching its maximum at 19:11. The wider eclipse sequence began earlier, at 16:28, with the penumbral stage, and concluded at 21:55 after the Moon had moved through the later penumbral phase.
Visibility in the UK depended heavily on geography. Eastern areas had the best opportunity to see totality because the Moon rose earlier there. BBC News cited Norwich, where moonrise was at 19:25, as an example of a location with a longer window. In western Wales and Cornwall, the visible period of totality was expected to be only a minute or two. Northern Ireland and western Scotland were not expected to see totality, though observers there could still have seen part of Earth’s shadow crossing the Moon.
Beyond the UK, the viewing zone was far wider. The BBC reported that most of the Americas would miss the eclipse, while observers in the easternmost parts of Africa, the Middle East, most of Asia and western Australia were expected to be able to follow the full event from beginning to end.
A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, preventing sunlight from reaching the lunar surface in the usual way. In a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is fully inside Earth’s shadow. The red tone often associated with the event is why it is commonly called a “Blood Moon”.
Dr Edward Bloomer, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, told the BBC that UK viewers would not see the most dramatic reddening but said the event was still worth observing because it showed the mechanics of the solar system. He also explained that the red appearance is caused by light passing through Earth’s atmosphere, the same broad effect that contributes to red sunsets.
The BBC described the colour as the result of Rayleigh scattering, in which shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more strongly while longer red wavelengths remain visible. During a lunar eclipse, the sunlight that reaches the Moon has travelled through Earth’s atmosphere before illuminating the lunar surface.
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse can be viewed directly without eye protection because the Moon’s reflected light is not bright enough to harm eyesight. The BBC advised observers to find a location with a clear view of the horizon before moonrise, with binoculars or a telescope useful but not required.
Weather remained an important factor. The BBC forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms moving northeast across the UK during the day, with clearer spells more likely across much of England and Wales later on. Scotland and the far north of England were expected to have poorer viewing prospects because of rain and thicker cloud. The next lunar eclipse visible from the UK was listed for 28 August 2026.
