Spain recorded its hottest summer since records began in 1961, with the national weather agency AEMET saying the average temperature reached 24.2C and edged past the previous record of 24.1C set in 2022. The figure reflects more than a single heat spike. It points to a season in which extreme heat became the norm, heatwaves covered a large share of the calendar and the country moved further into a pattern meteorologists describe as persistently hotter summers.

AEMET spokesperson Ruben del Campo said the country was on a trend toward much hotter summers, and the data support that view. Spain experienced three heatwaves spanning 36 days during the summer, and the last Spanish summer without a heatwave was in 2014. That means hot spells were not isolated interruptions. They became part of the season's structure. AEMET said heatwave conditions appeared on one-third of all summer days, underlining how sustained the pressure was on infrastructure, public health and the land itself.

The most severe episode came in August. Spain endured a 16-day heatwave that was the most intense on record, with temperatures reaching 45C in the south. The combination of extreme heat and low rainfall created conditions that fueled wildfires. Those fires killed four people. Earlier in the year, June already saw temperatures rise to 46C in parts of the southwest, showing how early and how widely the season's extremes began.

The health consequences were substantial. The Carlos III Health Institute estimated that the August heatwave caused more than 1,100 deaths, mostly among people older than 65. That estimate does not mean heat alone was the only factor in each case, but it does show how dangerous prolonged high temperatures can be for older populations. In a country where many cities and towns are built for hotter summers than before but not for this level of sustained heat, the risks compound quickly.

Meteorologists say manmade climate change is making such events more common. The Spanish data fit that larger pattern without needing to overstate what one season proves on its own. The important point is that records were not merely broken. They were broken while the summer delivered repeated heatwaves, deadly fires and a death toll estimate that reached into the thousands.

Spain's experience matters beyond one national record. It shows how heat can move from a weather problem to a public-health problem and then to a fire-risk problem within the same season. It also shows why meteorological records are increasingly being read as early warning signs rather than historical curiosities. A season of this kind leaves a country with more than a new benchmark. It leaves hospitals, emergency services and fire crews to absorb the consequences.
