A major Cloudflare outage disrupted access to widely used websites and applications, exposing how failure at a single infrastructure provider can ripple across otherwise unrelated online services. Users began reporting problems shortly after 11:30 GMT on Tuesday, with X and ChatGPT among the prominent platforms affected.

Cloudflare said the incident began when a configuration file intended to manage threat traffic failed to operate as designed. The file triggered a crash in software responsible for handling traffic across the company's broader services. Cloudflare described the event as a significant outage, apologised to customers and internet users, and said any interruption involving its systems was unacceptable.

The company reported that it had resolved the underlying problem, although some services could continue returning errors while systems recovered. It also said there was no evidence of an attack or other malicious activity. That distinction matters because Cloudflare provides protection against attempts to overwhelm sites with traffic, yet the disruption originated inside its own technical configuration.

Users reported delays, failed pages or other problems at Grindr, Zoom and Canva. Some visitors to X saw an internal-server-error notice that identified Cloudflare as the origin. ChatGPT displayed a message asking some users to unblock challenges.cloudflare.com. Even Downdetector, the service many people use to check whether a platform is failing, showed errors as traffic surged.

Cloudflare says about 20% of websites use its services in some form. Its products include checks designed to separate human visitors from automated bots and systems that shield sites from denial-of-service attacks. The scale and convenience of that shared layer help explain why one software crash could appear simultaneously across services with no direct operational connection.

Alp Toker, director of internet-monitoring group NetBlocks, called the incident a severe disruption to Cloudflare's infrastructure. He said websites' growing need to place defensive services in front of their systems had also made the provider one of the internet's largest single points of failure. Cloudflare shares that concentrated infrastructure role with large cloud platforms.

The event followed outages at Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in the preceding month. Cybersecurity adviser Jake Moore of ESET said the run of failures highlighted organizations' dependence on a small number of networks, while alternatives for hosting and protection remain limited.

Cloudflare's account pointed to an internal configuration and software failure, not hostile action. The outage's wider lesson came from its reach: security and traffic-management layers can improve reliability for individual customers, but when many sites depend on the same layer, a defect there can produce a broad, correlated disruption rather than isolated failures.
