This decision follows findings that intense radiation from the Sun can corrupt data essential for flight control systems. Approximately 6,000 planes, representing nearly half of the company’s global fleet, are believed to be impacted by this technical vulnerability.
Experts note that coronal mass ejections, which involve the release of charged plasma from the Sun, can significantly affect aircraft electronics at altitudes exceeding 28,000 feet. These events inject heavily charged particles into the Earth's atmosphere, creating electrical interference. Former pilot Dr. Ian Getley highlighted that these atmospheric conditions pose specific risks to sensitive onboard aviation technology and satellite communications.
Regulators and airlines are currently coordinating the necessary updates to maintain safety standards. The European Union Aviation Safety Authority has established a deadline of November 30 for the completion of these modifications. While most aircraft are expected to receive a simple software patch, the process has already led to flight cancellations and operational adjustments for several major international carriers.
Major airlines, including American Airlines, Delta, and Air New Zealand, have acknowledged the disruption. American Airlines reported that 340 of its aircraft require attention during a particularly busy holiday travel period. Despite the volume of flights, carriers are working to minimize the impact on passengers while ensuring that all fleet operations remain in strict compliance with the manufacturer's updated safety guidelines.
UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed awareness of the issue, noting that the impact on domestic airlines appears limited. She expressed gratitude toward the technical teams working to implement these changes rapidly. Airports such as London Gatwick have advised passengers to remain in contact with their specific airlines for the most current information regarding their scheduled travel itineraries.
While some airlines like EasyJet report that they have already completed the necessary updates and expect to maintain normal schedules, other carriers are still navigating the logistics of the recall. Jetstar has reported temporary delays, while others are operating services cautiously until the software patches are successfully installed.
