Indonesian rescuers found a body and additional wreckage on Sulawesi island after a passenger plane carrying 11 people crashed while approaching Makassar, bringing the scale of the disaster into sharper focus as search teams worked through steep terrain and poor visibility.
The AP reported that the body of a man was recovered from a ravine about 200 meters deep on the slope of Mount Bulusaraung in South Sulawesi province. Searchers also found parts of the aircraft frame, passenger seats and what appeared to be the engine of the turboprop ATR 42-500 operated by Indonesia Air Transport.
The plane had been travelling from Yogyakarta on the island of Java to Makassar, the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, when it vanished from radar shortly after air traffic control instructed the crew to correct its approach alignment. AP said the aircraft was carrying eight crew members and three passengers from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, who were taking part in an airborne maritime surveillance mission.
The difficult terrain has complicated the operation. According to the report, strong winds, heavy fog and steep, rugged slopes slowed the search, while visibility at the summit was just a few meters. Rescuers also spotted additional bodies on a steep cliff, but were unable to reach them before darkness forced operations to stop for the day.
The search effort is taking place in one of the world’s most transportation-dependent countries. Indonesia relies heavily on air links and ferries to connect its more than 17,000 islands, a geography that has often turned accidents into large-scale rescue operations. The AP report noted that the country has been hit by repeated transportation disasters in recent years, including plane crashes, bus crashes and ferry sinkings.
For now, the key questions are how the plane lost contact so soon after the approach correction and how many people can be reached in the rugged area around the crash site. The recovery of one body has confirmed the crash site, but the full human toll remains unresolved.
What rescuers found on the mountain was consistent with a high-impact crash in severe terrain: scattered debris, a ravine, and access problems that have slowed the search from the start. With the operation set to resume, the next phase will focus on reaching the bodies that remain visible but out of reach and on determining what happened in the moments before the plane disappeared from radar.
The incident has already become another reminder of how quickly aviation emergencies can turn into prolonged recovery efforts in Indonesia, where mountains, weather and distance often make even a confirmed wreckage site hard to work.
