Giant tortoises are roaming Floreana in the Galápagos again for the first time in more than 180 years after conservationists released 158 captive-bred juveniles onto the island as part of a long-running ecological restoration project.

The release is the latest stage of the Floreana Ecological Restoration Project, led by the Galápagos National Park Directorate and supported by the Galápagos Conservation Trust. According to BBC News, the species native to the island, *Chelonoidis niger niger*, was driven to local extinction in the 1840s after sailors took thousands of tortoises for food on long voyages. The new release is intended to reverse part of that loss.

The project did not begin with the release itself. Scientists first identified tortoises carrying Floreana ancestry on Wolf Volcano on Isabela island in 2008. That discovery led to a back-breeding programme launched in 2017. Researchers selected 23 hybrid tortoises with the closest genetic links to the extinct subspecies and began breeding them in captivity on Santa Cruz island. By 2025, more than 600 hatchlings had been produced, and several hundred were large enough to survive in the wild.

The release of 158 juveniles is therefore the result of years of genetic screening, captive breeding and field preparation rather than a single intervention. The conservation trust called the moment a “hugely significant milestone” and described it as proof that collaboration between scientists, charities and local communities can restore island ecosystems. The BBC report says the work has taken about two decades of cooperation to reach this point.

The restoration effort also matters beyond Floreana itself. The Galápagos Conservation Trust says giant tortoises are ecosystem engineers because the way they move, graze and spread seeds shapes the landscape around them.
