The Artemis II crew has officially concluded their lunar flyby, marking a pivotal moment in NASA's ongoing efforts to return humans to the lunar surface. As the Orion spacecraft navigated its trajectory, the four astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—ventured deeper into space than any humans previously, surpassing the distance record established by the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.

During the mission, the Orion capsule reached a reportedly maximum distance of 252,756 miles from Earth. This achievement exceeded the Apollo 13 record by approximately 4,101 miles. The crew utilized a free-return trajectory, a gravity-assisted maneuver that allowed the spacecraft to loop behind the moon and set a course for Earth without requiring significant additional fuel consumption.

Throughout the seven-hour observation period, the astronauts conducted extensive imaging of the lunar surface. Using both professional-grade Nikon cameras and standard mobile devices, they documented various geological features, including the Orientale basin. These efforts provided the first direct human observations of the moon's far side, offering scientists new perspectives on lunar topography.

Mission activities were punctuated by a poignant tribute to the history of lunar exploration. Before the flyby commenced, the crew received a recorded message from the late Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell. The astronauts also carried an Apollo 8 silk patch, honoring the legacy of earlier missions as they prepared for their own return to Earth.
