A humanoid robot successfully set a new world record during a half marathon held in Beijing, completing the 21-kilometer course in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. The machine, developed by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor, raced alongside human participants on a parallel track. This performance significantly surpassed the current men's human world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds.
The event, which took place in Yizhuang, featured over 100 humanoid entries, a substantial increase from the approximately 20 robots that participated in the inaugural race last year. During the previous competition, the top-performing robots took over two hours and 40 minutes to finish the course. This year’s result indicates a major leap in agility and mechanical efficiency for the sector.
Organizers noted that nearly half of the competing robots utilized autonomous navigation systems, while others were operated via remote control. The winning robot was engineered with long legs and advanced liquid-cooling technology to sustain high speeds throughout the race. Engineers suggest that these specific design features could eventually be transferred to industrial applications and manufacturing scenarios.
Despite the breakthrough, the race also highlighted the current limitations of robotics. Some machines struggled at the starting line, veered into barriers, or required assistance from security personnel after stumbling. These technical glitches illustrate the ongoing challenge for firms to develop AI software capable of matching the consistent performance of human workers in complex environments.
Spectators expressed a mixture of awe and concern regarding the rapid pace of technological progress. While some attendees praised the innovation, others voiced worries about the potential impact of sophisticated artificial intelligence on future employment. Experts suggest that as robots become more capable, they may eventually be integrated into daily life for housework or caregiving duties.
China has invested heavily in robotics and embodied AI, with total investment reaching 73.5 billion yuan in 2025. This push is part of a broader economic strategy to dominate the global technology landscape.
