Blue Origin launched its New Glenn rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, using a previously flown booster for the first time, then recovered that stage on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean. The flight demonstrated a new level of reuse for the company's largest rocket, but its satellite deployment did not proceed entirely as intended.
The 98-metre (321-foot) vehicle lifted off at about 7:25 a.m. local time, or 1125 GMT, carrying a communications satellite for AST SpaceMobile. Following separation, New Glenn's upper stage continued toward space with the payload. The booster returned under control and landed on the offshore platform approximately nine minutes and 30 seconds after launch.
Blue Origin later said the satellite had powered on correctly but had been delivered to what it described as an off-nominal orbit. The company was assessing the problem, and the immediate consequences for the spacecraft were not known. That left the mission with a clear technical success in booster reuse and recovery alongside an unresolved setback involving the primary payload.
New Glenn had flown twice before, but both earlier launches used new boosters. Blue Origin recovered a New Glenn booster for the first time in November, achieving a controlled vertical landing at sea. An earlier recovery attempt in January 2025 failed when the booster's engines did not restart during descent. The stage used for the April flight was refurbished after its earlier mission. For this initial reuse, Blue Origin replaced all of its engines and made other modifications.
The flight extended the company's experience beyond New Shepard, its smaller rocket used mainly for suborbital space tourism. Blue Origin has previously reused components on New Shepard, but an orbital-class New Glenn mission presents a more demanding operation. Recovering and flying boosters again could allow the company to increase launch frequency as it competes with SpaceX, which also recovers rocket stages.
New Glenn is central to Blue Origin's broader plans, including its work on a lunar lander for NASA's Artemis program. SpaceX is also developing a lunar lander for the US space agency. The United States is pursuing a return of astronauts to the Moon's surface in 2028. For Blue Origin, the event therefore supplied evidence of progress on reusable launch operations, while the satellite's orbital outcome remained under investigation.
The mission left Blue Origin with two distinct follow-up tasks: integrate the successful booster return into future launch operations and establish whether AST SpaceMobile's powered-on satellite could recover from the unintended orbit. No assessment of the payload's operational prospects or the time required for the investigation was available.
