Spain confirmed an additional hantavirus infection associated with the outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius, according to an account dated May 25, 2026. The Health Ministry said the patient was a Spanish national already being held in preventive quarantine at a Madrid hospital.
The person was described by the ministry as a close contact of someone connected to the original outbreak. The infection was found through periodic testing of contacts, rather than through detection outside the established monitoring system. Before the positive result, the patient had been under clinical surveillance and isolation at Gómez Ulla Hospital.
After testing positive, the patient was transferred to the hospital’s high-level isolation unit and placed under specialized medical supervision, the ministry said. It did not provide further personal information about the patient or describe the person’s condition in the available statement.
Spanish authorities said the case did not alter their assessment of the threat to the general population. They also said no change was required to the epidemiological measures already in operation because the infected person had been identified within the activated quarantine and isolation framework.
Outbreak followed an extended voyage
The MV Hondius had completed a seven-week journey covering 8,500 miles. The voyage was affected by as many as 11 infections and three deaths linked to the rare disease. No further deaths had been reported since May 2, when the outbreak was initially notified to the World Health Organization.
Oceanwide Expeditions said 20 crew members and two members of the medical staff disembarked in the Netherlands during the previous week. Most passengers were quarantining in their home countries, including 18 Americans.
Hantavirus is endemic in some areas of South America but is very rarely recorded in people, according to the cited report. The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius was described as the first time the virus had been documented on a cruise ship. Its incubation period can extend to six weeks, a factor reflected in the continuing quarantine, surveillance and repeated testing of people connected to the voyage.
Global and United States health officials had sought to ease concern about broader spread.
