Dan Greaney, the Emmy-winning writer best known for a Simpsons episode that once appeared to predict Donald Trump’s rise, has announced a bid for the 2028 U.S. presidential race. The Independent reported that Greaney made the announcement in a Tuesday Instagram video, adding another offbeat entry to an election cycle that is still years away.
The campaign launch is unusual even by modern political standards. Greaney appeared in a wizard costume, criticized both parties and framed his candidacy as a response to what he sees as failure in Washington. He described his platform as “America for all” and said he would run as a progressive Republican, backing universal healthcare and a return to morality.
The story matters less as a serious front-runner announcement than as a sign of how pop culture and politics continue to overlap. Greaney is widely associated with a 2000 Simpsons episode that showed Lisa Simpson inheriting the White House after a fictional Trump presidency. That long-running joke helped turn him into a kind of cult figure among people fascinated by political prediction.
According to The Independent, Greaney referred to himself as a prophet in the launch video and said Trump, Vance, billionaires, careerists and cowards had turned their backs on the United States. He also said he was not a lawyer before correcting himself and declaring that he had gone to law school, passed the bar and could therefore run for office. The theatrical costume change in the video was clearly part of the pitch.
At the same time, the report suggests Greaney is not simply making a joke. He is filing himself into the 2028 conversation as one of the very few candidates who have even begun to position themselves. The article described the field as thin and noted that Greaney’s bid is independent rather than part of the established party machinery.
What is not yet known is whether he will build any real organization, ballot access or fundraising operation. The report did not include evidence of formal party support or an established campaign infrastructure. That means the announcement is real, but its political seriousness remains open.
Even so, Greaney’s candidacy has obvious symbolic appeal. It taps into nostalgia, satire and dissatisfaction all at once. It also demonstrates how a figure known for writing comedy can use the language of prophecy and performance to enter politics in an attention-driven age.
