A championship upset closed an unprecedented evening in Washington, where Justin Gaethje beat the previously undefeated Ilia Topuria and secured his first undisputed UFC lightweight crown. President Donald Trump, watching near the cage, greeted the American winner afterward. Topuria arrived with seventeen victories and no defeats; betting expectations nevertheless favored him over Gaethje.
Before any punch was thrown, the location had made UFC Freedom 250 historically distinct. Organizers installed an Octagon on the presidential residence’s South Lawn, making Sunday’s program the inaugural Ultimate Fighting Championship card held at that address. A patriotic structure exceeding ninety-two feet covered the fighting area. Nicknamed “The Claw,” its temporary rigging was due to disappear once competition ended, according to Trump.
The occasion joined two celebrations: America’s semiquincentennial and the president’s eightieth birthday. Trump appeared beside UFC chief Dana White on a balcony during the opening, and applause followed a spectator’s birthday salutation. Music came from the Zac Brown Band together with the Joint Armed Forces Chorus, whose anthem performance concluded alongside a military aircraft flyover. Among prominent attendees was Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Weather forecasts warning of storms did not prevent a crowd numbering in the thousands from attending. Some spectators gathered beyond the grounds at the Ellipse, while Paramount+ carried the principal contests online. Trump left for France and a Group of Seven leaders’ meeting after the card finished.
One post-fight episode shifted attention away from sport. Following a knockout, heavyweight champion Josh Hokit handed Trump a chain, then made a false, insulting assertion concerning Michelle Obama. The former first lady’s family should not be targeted with such comments, White said while denouncing the episode. New Mexico Democratic lawmaker Melissa Stansbury also issued public criticism. The offensive allegation itself was not repeated.
Judicial scrutiny had preceded the spectacle. A lawsuit from two people living in Virginia alleged that a commercial sports promoter had received improper use of federal property and its valuable branding opportunities. The Justice Department answered that their filing came too late and failed to establish injury. On Friday, the presiding judge refused their request to prevent the fights, allowing preparations to continue.
Freedom 250 organizers positioned the UFC card as an initial piece of a larger anniversary schedule rather than a standalone attraction. Their summer program also listed a Great American State Fair and a Washington, D.C., motor race called the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. On this opening night, however, the lasting competitive result belonged to the underdog: Gaethje overturned the pre-fight forecast, ended Topuria’s perfect record and left the unusual presidential venue as lightweight champion.
