Tab Baldwin, the head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, has resigned from his position at Ateneo de Manila University. This departure follows the deaths of two student-athletes, Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia, who drowned during a team-building swimming activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. University president Father Roberto Yap confirmed the resignation, noting that the institution has accepted the decision effective immediately.

Father Yap stated that the university is entering a period of deep institutional review. He emphasized that a change in leadership is necessary to maintain the integrity of the school's sports programs and to evaluate the safety protocols governing athletic activities. The administration aims to examine existing systems to ensure that playing environments remain safe for all participants.

In a pre-recorded video message, Baldwin expressed profound remorse regarding the tragedy. He explained that the coaching staff had directed players into what they believed to be shallow water during a routine training exercise. However, strong waves reportedly swept several individuals into deeper, dangerous waters. While other players were successfully rescued, Adili and Baterbonia could not be saved.

Baldwin, an American-Kiwi coach previously inducted into the New Zealand Basketball Hall of Fame, acknowledged his responsibility for the well-being of the athletes. He stated that he felt he had failed the families involved and offered a deep apology for the loss. The coach has been a prominent figure in basketball, having led the Tall Blacks to fourth place in the 2002 world championships.

Legal and regulatory scrutiny is currently intensifying. The Philippines Department of Labour has subpoenaed Baldwin to present documentation regarding his work permit and the specifics of the training camp. Labour Secretary Francis Tolentino stated that the government intends to ensure accountability, noting that foreign nationals working within the country must adhere to local laws.

Beyond the labor investigation, the Department of Justice and the National Bureau of Investigation have initiated separate inquiries into the incident. These investigations seek to determine whether established safety protocols were followed during the team-building event. The university has also formed an independent fact-finding panel to review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for an immediate investigation into the deaths. As the university community processes the loss, Father Yap has pledged continued support for the student-athletes, coaches, and staff who are currently managing the emotional toll of the tragedy and the surrounding public discourse.
