Canada secured its first victory at a FIFA World Cup by defeating Qatar 6-0 at BC Place in Vancouver. Jonathan David scored three times, Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba added a goal each, and a Qatar own goal completed the Group B result. Qatar finished with nine players after two dismissals.

Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute. David struck twice before halftime, placing Canada three goals ahead. Qatar had already lost Homam el-Amin to a red card in the first half, giving the co-hosts numerical control as well as a substantial lead.

The match changed in tone after Canada midfielder Ismael Kone suffered a serious injury in the 51st minute. Assim Madibo challenged Kone from behind, leaving the Italy-based player holding his left leg as teammates urgently called medical staff onto the field. Kone was eventually carried off on a stretcher, using oxygen and waving to the crowd.

Madibo initially received a yellow card. Following a video-assistant-referee review, officials upgraded the punishment to red, reducing Qatar to nine players. Canada then scored three more times.

Saliba, who replaced Kone, converted a curling free kick in the 64th minute to make the score 4-0. He marked the goal by running to the touchline and holding up a replica of Kone's Canada shirt. Substitute Jacob Shaffelburg then drove a shot that Qatar defender Mohammad Manai diverted into his own net for the fifth goal.

David finished his hat-trick in the second minute of stoppage time. His three goals, combined with Larin's opener, Saliba's free kick and the own goal, gave Canada a six-goal margin in a match attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The victory placed Canada in a strong position ahead of its final group fixture. A draw against Switzerland would be enough for the team to finish first in Group B. That competitive outcome was historic for a national side recording its first win on football's largest tournament stage.

Celebration was tempered, however, by the visible seriousness of Kone's injury. The immediate report did not provide a diagnosis or recovery timetable, so the medical consequences remained unknown. The match therefore ended with two sharply different outcomes for Canada: a landmark six-goal win and progress toward winning the group, alongside concern for a midfielder removed after a challenge that resulted in Qatar's second sending-off.

Canada's advantage grew after each dismissal, but the six goals still came through a defined sequence of two first-half scorers, a substitute's free kick, an own goal and David's stoppage-time completion. The final group position would depend on the Switzerland match.
