Curaçao collected the first World Cup point in its history on June 20, 2026, holding Ecuador to a 0–0 draw in Kansas City. Goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves as the tournament debutants resisted 28 Ecuador attempts and recovered competitively from a 7–1 loss to Germany in their opening match.
Ecuador, second in South American qualifying, directed 15 of its shots on target but could not beat Room. His total was reported as the most saves recorded since 1966 by a goalkeeper in a World Cup match that did not go to extra time. The performance allowed Curaçao to remain in contention for the knockout phase from Group E.
Room was tested almost immediately. In the third minute, former West Ham forward Enner Valencia broke through the centre and forced the goalkeeper to turn the ball around the post. Valencia later had another close-range opportunity stopped, while Jordy Alcívar also threatened as Ecuador controlled much of the play.
Ecuador held 65% possession in the first half. Curaçao occasionally countered, with Sherel Floranus firing over, but the match’s dominant pattern was pressure on Room’s goal. Shortly before the hour, he saved a Gonzalo Plata header. Late in the match, substitute Ángelo Preciado mishit a cross that struck the top of the crossbar and went behind.
Curaçao’s players surrounded Room at full time as they celebrated the scoreless result. The goalkeeper credited confidence from his first save and described the outcome as a collective effort sustained to the final minute. The island, an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was the smallest nation by population ever to appear at the World Cup.
Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima attended the match. Curaçao’s squad, coached by Dick Advocaat, included 25 Netherlands-born players among its 26 members, with many playing their club football there. Those connections supplied background to the team, while the point itself came from the players’ defensive resistance in Kansas City.
The draw confirmed Germany as group winner after the four-time champions beat Ivory Coast 2–1. Ecuador was due to face Germany next, while Curaçao would play Ivory Coast, with every Group E team still able to progress. Ecuador had yet to score in two tournament games; Curaçao had conceded seven in its first but none in its second. On June 20, Room’s record-level shot stopping turned that contrast into a national milestone and kept the debut campaign alive.
