A hobby project for tracking weather balloons became an unexpected point of contact for government agencies, aviation users and military-linked activity, according to a first-person account posted by a SondeHub operator on the 2026-08-19 event date.

The account says sondehub.org was registered on 12 May 2018 after weather-balloon enthusiasts had been using Habhub, a high-altitude ballooning site built primarily for amateur balloon flights. The new domain was initially only a shortcut: it redirected visitors to Habhub with a filter suited to radiosondes, the transmitters carried by weather balloons. The writer characterises the domain purchase as a joke rather than the start of a dedicated tracking platform.

That changed as more radiosonde data moved through the system. By July 2018, the SondeHub operators began proxying radiosonde ingestion data, partly to handle volume and partly to experiment with cloud services and analytics. By 2019, the post says, Habhub and related systems were under strain, prompting work on separate SondeHub services, including APIs and a new backend.

The post describes SondeHub as becoming useful because it tracked radiosondes farther through their flights than some official tools did at the time. The operator says the project received government information requests, including one involving an insurance claim after a radiosonde allegedly struck a horse and caused it to bolt through a fence. SondeHub also noticed a fall in launches around the 2019 GPS rollover, which the writer says was later attributed to Vaisala equipment issues rather than SondeHub software.

In 2020 and 2021, the operators built backward-compatible APIs so the Habhub frontend could use SondeHub’s backend. The project later offered open access to data through S3 and ran its own prediction system. A further tool, called reverse predictions, used data from an already launched radiosonde and wind models to estimate likely launch locations.

That feature created the most sensitive issue described in the account. The writer says reverse predictions could identify poorly documented launch sites, including sites associated with sensitive or military installations and military vessels at sea. SondeHub kept the capability but removed launch-site markers after what the operator considered genuine requests.

Traffic and attention increased after the 2023 Chinese balloon incident. The account says SondeHub then received more support requests from .mil and .gov addresses, as well as aviation and air-traffic users. In December 2024, the operator noticed heavy prediction API use from a single IP address. After investigation and outreach attempts, the writer came to believe groups connected to Ukraine’s war effort may have been using prediction tools, including for balloon or fixed-wing operations.

The post says the SondeHub operator contacted AWS because the traffic came from an AWS network, while asking that the account not be blocked or rate-limited. The operator wrote that shutting off access or exposing request data could have dangerous consequences, and also prepared a Docker Compose setup so users could run a predictor without relying on SondeHub’s public service.

The account is a rare example of a volunteer technical project confronting unintended military relevance. It presents SondeHub as an open data service built for weather-balloon tracking that later had to manage operational-security concerns, infrastructure abuse, and requests from official users without abandoning its public-interest role.
