The homeowner says the core heating and cooling hardware still worked, but the Android-based control tablet stopped loading, and the vendor quoted a replacement path that would have meant changing much more than the tablet itself.
The system described in the post combines a Daikin air conditioner, an Advantage Air control box and a PoE-powered Android tablet mounted on the wall. According to the author, the tablet serves as the everyday interface for turning zones on and off, adjusting fan speed and monitoring temperatures. The story begins when that tablet started throwing Google services errors, then failed to launch the e-zone app entirely.
The first recovery attempts were standard consumer troubleshooting: restarting the tablet, entering recovery mode, clearing partitions and trying to revive the device through software. None of it worked. The vendor’s initial response, as described in the post, was that because the system was out of warranty a dead tablet would require a new control system at a cost of $1,245.
The homeowner says the eventual written quote came back even higher. The total reportedly reached $1,697 once the tablet, the control system and wireless temperature sensors were included. The post argues that this was excessive because the air-conditioner and control box were still functional and the failure appeared confined to the tablet.
What followed was a deeper hardware investigation. The tablet was removed from the wall and opened. The author says they discovered a hidden USB port and later found that the PoE connector also carried USB 5V and data lines. After cutting those lines, the device became visible to fastboot, which suggested the tablet could be connected to a computer in a way the earlier wiring had hidden.
