# South Korea fire destroys government cloud storage, exposing a backup gap
A fire at the National Information Resources Service headquarters in Daejeon has destroyed the South Korean government’s G-Drive cloud storage system, according to reporting in Korea JoongAng Daily. The loss is significant because the platform was used as the main document repository for many civil servants, and the article says the system had no external backups. That left the government facing both an operational disruption and a painful reminder of how a single storage design choice can turn a fire into a data-loss event.
The article says the blaze hit the server room on the fifth floor and damaged 96 information systems that were classified as critical to central government operations. The G-Drive system was described as a service in use since 2018, with roughly 30 gigabytes of storage allocated per person. Civil servants were expected to store work documents there rather than on personal machines. When the fire destroyed the storage system, the result was not simply downtime. The reporting says files stored individually by around 750,000 civil servants were erased.
The most consequential detail is the lack of external backup. The article says the government’s general data-center systems are backed up daily to separate equipment in the same center and to a remote facility, but the G-Drive architecture did not allow that kind of protection. In effect, the system appears to have been designed with convenience and centralized control in mind, but not with a recovery path robust enough for a catastrophic fire. That distinction matters because cloud storage is often sold as a resilience layer. In this case, the cloud itself became the point of failure.
The story also shows how government records are not all stored in one place. The Interior Ministry said formal reports and approval records were also kept in the Onnara system, which may allow some recovery once that platform is restored. The report further says agencies are trying to reconstruct work from local files saved on personal computers, emails, official documents and printed records. That kind of piecemeal recovery is expensive, slow, and imperfect, but it may keep some agencies functioning while the broader damage is assessed.
The hardest-hit agency appears to be the Ministry of Personnel Management, which required departments to use G-Drive exclusively. The article says all departments there are expected to experience work disruption. Other agencies that used the platform less extensively suffered less damage, but the scale of the incident still exposes a common weakness in digital governance: a system can be mandatory, large, and heavily used without being adequately recoverable.
For public-sector IT planners, the implications are straightforward. If a storage system becomes the default place for official work, then redundancy, offsite backup and recovery testing are not optional extras. They are the core of the service. This incident suggests that a gap in one architecture decision can cascade into an administrative crisis across multiple agencies. The immediate question for South Korea is how much data can be salvaged from secondary records and local machines. The larger question is why a system at the center of government operations was left exposed to a total loss scenario at all.
