Flipper Devices has publicly outlined Flipper One, an expandable Linux computer intended for networking, radio and portable technical projects, while asking outside contributors to help shape unfinished hardware and software.

The company stresses that Flipper One is not a replacement or generational update for Flipper Zero. Where the earlier product serves a different class of tasks, Flipper One is described as an open Linux platform that could be configured as a 5G-capable network analyzer, a software-defined-radio system or another specialized portable computer.

Expansion is central to the concept. Flipper says modules can connect through PCI Express, USB 3.0 and SATA, allowing additions such as solid-state storage, cellular modems and radio hardware. Planned built-in networking includes two Gigabit Ethernet ports, USB Ethernet rated at 5 Gbps and Wi-Fi 6E across the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands. An M.2 modem could add 5G, supporting uses such as a router, VPN gateway or wired-to-wireless bridge.

The design uses a Rockchip RK3576 system-on-chip and aims to run a recent upstream Linux kernel without vendor patches. Flipper says it is working with Collabora to add full support for the chip to the mainline kernel. Major components are already working, according to the announcement, but gaps remain. A proprietary DDR-training component is still present early in the boot process, and work continues on power management, USB DisplayPort alternate mode, the neural-processing unit and video acceleration.

Flipper One also pairs its main processor with a low-power microcontroller. The smaller chip is intended to keep the buttons and LCD available even when Linux and the main CPU are off, and to control boot behavior. The processors communicate through SPI for display data, I2C for commands and input events, and UART and GPIO lines for boot control. Flipper wants related display and input drivers reviewed and accepted upstream rather than maintained as private vendor patches.

On the software side, the company is prototyping Flipper OS as a layer over a Debian-based system. Its proposed profiles would act as complete snapshots with different packages and settings. Users could clone or modify a profile, revert to a clean version or switch roles without repeatedly reimaging storage. Flipper acknowledges that it has not settled the architecture and says it wants the approach to be useful beyond its own device.

The development process itself is being opened through a public, editable developer portal containing task trackers, documentation and technical debates. The company is inviting engineers, designers, software developers and users to contribute, and is also recruiting a manager to connect the internal teams with that community.

Flipper's post is a development statement, not a finished-product review. It provides no final release date or assurance that every proposed capability will ship. Its significance lies in the decision to expose difficult engineering work early and seek community review while fundamental choices remain open.
