A Gmail user of 16 years has begun moving away from the service after concluding that its expanding set of generative-AI features made routine email reading and writing feel intrusive. The personal account does not establish how all Gmail users experience the interface, but it documents a specific form of resistance to AI features embedded by default.

The author described opening a message and encountering an automatically generated summary that had not been requested. When starting a reply, a machine-written draft was already present and had to be deleted. Composing a separate email produced several more prompts: an animation promoting “Help me write,” an instruction to press a slash for that feature, and a “Tab to improve” suggestion after a pause in writing.

The objection was not to the existence of an optional writing assistant. Instead, the author argued that repeated prompts and pre-generated text changed the relationship between the product and its user. In that view, the interface treated unaided reading and writing as activities needing correction, while also interrupting the work it was supposed to support.

Control over the features was another concern. According to the account, some AI functions could be disabled, while others could not be turned off independently or required sacrificing established features such as automatic thread categorization. The author suspected that default exposure helped increase usage metrics, but supplied no internal Google evidence for that interpretation. It should therefore be understood as the user's inference, not a confirmed product strategy.

Rather than use another client with the same account, the author chose a broader exit. The migration plan connects a personal domain to a separate mail host, reducing dependence on an address controlled by a single provider. Fastmail was selected after recommendations on the fediverse. Early steps included connecting multiple domains and creating aliases; the author had not yet decided whether to import the old Gmail archive, though contact migration appeared likely.

The experience illustrates a product-design problem as AI moves from optional tools into default interface behavior. Each individual suggestion may be dismissible, yet their combined frequency can determine whether users perceive assistance or pressure. It also shows why account portability differs from data export: after 16 years, changing an email address can affect identity, contacts and service registrations even if messages themselves can be copied.

This is one user's decision, not evidence of a broad Gmail exodus. Its significance lies in the stated reason for leaving a service that the author otherwise regarded as stable: accumulated interface friction outweighed the considerable cost of switching.
