Peripheral maker Keychron has announced ZGM, an open-source firmware project intended to bring gaming mice some of the customization and portability already available to mechanical keyboards. Digital Foundry reports that the firmware is planned for release in the first quarter of 2027 alongside Keychron's G6 HE hybrid magnetic-switch gaming mouse.
The concept is comparable to QMK and ZMK, two firmware projects used with customizable keyboards. In that market, open firmware lets owners change device behavior without depending exclusively on a manufacturer's configuration application. Settings can be stored in the device's internal memory, allowing them to remain active without a background program running on the host computer.
ZGM is intended to apply that model to mice, a product category where open-source firmware remains uncommon. According to the project's early description, the design prioritizes low-latency operation and separates major functions into modular layers. Planned components cover sensors, buttons, scroll wheels and lighting. The project also aims to support multiple microcontrollers as well as wired and wireless devices.
The announcement remains preliminary. Digital Foundry says Keychron describes ZGM as being in an early setup phase, and the available project page contains limited implementation detail. Keychron nevertheless intends to develop the foundation publicly and incorporate community feedback. The code is expected to use the GNU General Public License.
The G6 HE provides the first announced target. Digital Foundry identifies the mouse as an early competitor to Logitech's X2 SuperStrike and says open firmware would add another distinguishing feature. The release schedule leaves time for the design, device support and contribution process to change before a public version is ready.
Keychron has already used open development for keyboards, releasing firmware and STEP-format design files to its community. Some other peripheral manufacturers, including Wooting, have released portions of their work under permissive licences. However, comparable projects have not become routine among the largest gaming-mouse brands.
An open firmware layer could give users longer-term control over device behavior and let developers add functions independently of a vendor's desktop software. Its practical value will depend on hardware support, documentation, maintenance and whether outside contributors adopt the platform. QMK became an important foundation for boutique keyboards, but ZGM has not yet demonstrated similar reach.
For now, the announcement establishes a public direction rather than a finished alternative to proprietary mouse software, with implementation details still subject to community development as work continues. The first meaningful test will arrive when Keychron publishes usable firmware and the G6 HE reaches customers under the planned 2027 schedule.
