Technology historian Dave Wilson says he has identified Stephen E. Carlsen as the engineer who built the initial version of TIFF, the image-file format developed at Aldus during the emergence of desktop publishing. The finding restores an individual name to a standard often credited only to the company that created it.
TIFF, short for Tag Image File Format, was designed in the mid-1980s to store scanned images and related metadata. It could represent monochrome, grayscale and colour material while recording properties such as image size, compression method and colour space. Wilson’s account places its initial development in 1986, after Electronic Arts engineer Jerry Morrison created the Interchange File Format in 1985 and before Apple’s Audio Interchange File Format work.
The investigation began while Wilson was researching AIFF and Apple’s early digital-audio efforts for an updated version of his book, “Inventing the Future.” He interviewed Steve Milne and Mark Lentczner about their work on AIFF, which they developed as Apple programmers and musicians seeking a common standard for audio data. Their references to IFF and TIFF prompted him to look for the people behind those earlier formats.
Finding TIFF’s author proved harder. Historical accounts generally named Aldus, the maker of PageMaker, rather than an engineer. Wilson first encountered a reference to “Steve Carlson” in old issues of MacWeek and then found a brief mention in a Computer History Museum oral-history transcript with Aldus co-founder Paul Brainerd. Misspellings of the surname, repeated in later material, initially stalled the search.
The decisive clue was in the final Aldus TIFF specification. Wilson says an author credit appeared as white text on a white background and was therefore invisible in the document’s ordinary presentation. Searching a plain-text version exposed the correct spelling: Carlsen. Patent records then showed inventions assigned to Stephen E. Carlsen during work at Aldus and Adobe in Issaquah, Washington.
With no public email address available, Wilson used an address listing for a retirement community in Washington state and mailed a one-page letter. Four months later, Carlsen answered by email and confirmed the central account.
Carlsen described a practical commercial problem behind the format. Aldus expected a growing number of desktop scanners and did not want to write a separate import filter for every model. A shared specification could give scanner makers and third-party software developers a common method for storing and processing scanned images. Carlsen said he developed the initial TIFF and then helped promote it as an industry standard.
The account is based on Wilson’s first-person description of his research and correspondence. Within that evidence, the significance is less a claim of a lone, isolated invention than the recovery of a named engineer’s role in starting a format that Aldus subsequently had to document, promote and persuade other companies to adopt.
