A security blogger has published a detailed account of physically removing the Data Communication Module and disconnecting the GPS antenna in a 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. The project was intended to prevent the vehicle from transmitting telemetry, but the author emphasized that the procedure disables connected functions and carries safety, warranty and usability trade-offs.

The modification targeted the vehicle's cellular hardware rather than relying on software settings. According to the account, removing the DCM stops over-the-air updates, Toyota cloud services and the car's built-in SOS and automatic crash-notification functions. The author described the loss of emergency calling as a safety cost that owners would need to consider, not an incidental side effect.

The DCM also carried the cabin microphone connection in this vehicle. To preserve calls through CarPlay, the project used a separate bypass harness after the module was removed. The work required removing trim, the shifter surround, controls and the radio, then maneuvering the DCM out of a confined area. The author characterized the job as medium difficulty and said it took several hours.

GPS was handled separately. After the modem removal, the author's phone sometimes received an incorrect vehicle location through CarPlay. The workaround was to disconnect the GPS antenna from the head unit, allowing the phone to rely on its own position data. The account warns that wire identification and component layout can vary, and notes that access to Toyota's technical information would remove some guesswork.

After reassembly, the author checked for a no-connection indicator, an inactive SOS light and a functioning microphone during a CarPlay call. The report concludes that the car could no longer transmit telemetry over its own modem, while acknowledging that data might still be stored locally. It also raises an unverified concern, based on an owners' forum discussion, that a Bluetooth-connected phone could provide an internet route; the author therefore chose wired USB. That point was not personally confirmed.

It involves disassembling safety-relevant consumer hardware and may affect coverage related to altered systems.
