The US National Science Foundation plans to remove more than 900 instruments belonging to the Ocean Observatories Initiative from waters in the Atlantic and Pacific, ending a large part of a monitoring system that scientists use to follow ocean conditions and major currents. Officials expect the recovery work to take place over 15 months.
The affected infrastructure is deployed off Oregon, Washington, Alaska and North Carolina, as well as in the ocean between Greenland and Iceland. The network began operating in 2016 and had been designed for a service life of at least 25 years. Its removal after roughly a decade would shorten that planned observation period substantially.
Data from the initiative have supported research into the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC. This connected system of currents transports warmth toward northern Europe and influences climate well beyond the North Atlantic. Researchers have raised concern that continued warming could push the circulation toward a threshold after which it weakens severely or stops. The supplied evidence does not establish when or whether such a collapse will occur, but it shows why continuous measurements are valuable: long records let scientists distinguish sustained change from shorter natural variation.
The instruments also serve broader work on ocean behavior and marine life. Removing them would therefore affect more than a single climate indicator. The loss is especially consequential for studies that require consistent readings from fixed locations over many years, because a break in observations cannot be reconstructed later simply by redeploying equipment.
Helen Findlay of the UK's Plymouth Marine Laboratory said reducing sustained observations would leave society with less visibility into an increasingly changeable ocean. She argued that uncertainty over AMOC's future strengthens, rather than reduces, the case for long-term monitoring. Her statement reflects a scientific concern about the consequences of losing measurements; it is not a prediction that the current system is certain to collapse.
The announcement followed the Trump administration's dismissal of the NSF's independent oversight board. Democratic members of Congress said they would oppose the dismantling plan. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse publicly connected the decision to the politics of fossil fuels and ocean warming.
The immediate policy question is whether that opposition changes the removal schedule. If it does not, researchers will face an observation gap across multiple ocean regions while scientific and political debate over AMOC risk continues.\n\nRecovering hundreds of instruments is itself a staged marine operation, which is why the announced timetable extends beyond a year. During that interval, different sites may stop reporting at different times. Researchers using the network will need to document those endpoints carefully so later analyses do not mistake a shrinking observation system for a change in ocean conditions.
