Canonical has released Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, the first point update to the Resolute Raccoon long-term-support series. The company says the downloadable image consolidates fixes and improvements made since Ubuntu 26.04 launched, while users of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS are due to receive desktop upgrade prompts.
The release completes Ubuntu's desktop shift to Wayland and ships GNOME 50. Canonical says fractional display scaling and variable refresh rate have moved out of experimental status, alongside per-monitor scaling, touch and gesture support and compatibility with current production Nvidia drivers. The default application set now includes Papers for documents, Loupe for images, Ptyxis as the terminal and Resources for system monitoring. The App Center presents Debian packages and snaps together.
Developers receive refreshed toolchains for languages including Python, Rust, Ruby, Go, PHP and Perl. Ubuntu 26.04 is also the first version in the distribution to carry Nvidia CUDA directly in its software repositories, according to Canonical. Nvidia's DOCA-OFED networking software is available through an official personal package archive, while AMD's ROCm platform is now in Ubuntu repositories for accelerated artificial-intelligence and high-performance-computing workloads.
Security changes are a major part of the point release's pitch. TPM-backed full-disk encryption is generally available in the installer, binding encrypted storage to a machine's trusted platform module. The Security Center provides a place to inspect encryption, recovery, Secure Boot and disk-protection settings after deployment. Canonical also highlights a larger set of memory-safe system components, including kernel work in Rust and the sudo-rs and uutils implementations, while retaining GNU alternatives for compatibility.
The system enables hybrid post-quantum key exchange by default and retires legacy cryptographic ciphers, the company says. It adds host and guest support for confidential computing on Intel TDX and AMD SEV, expands Canonical Livepatch to Arm64, and updates the Windows Subsystem for Linux experience with cloud-init and Ubuntu Pro integration. Enterprise identity support includes authd packages for providers such as Microsoft Entra ID, Google IAM and services compatible with OpenID Connect.
As an LTS release, Ubuntu 26.04 receives five years of standard security maintenance for the main repository. Canonical markets Ubuntu Pro as extending coverage to 10 years and more packages, with a paid Legacy Support add-on taking the commitment to 15 years.
The .1 image is especially significant for conservative desktop and fleet administrators who wait for the first maintenance release before moving between LTS versions. Availability of an upgrade prompt does not remove the need to test hardware, applications, encryption recovery and management tooling before a broad rollout.
