# Seven killed in Kashmir attack on workers at Sonamarg tunnel project

Seven people were killed and at least five others injured on 2024-10-21 when gunmen opened fire on workers at a construction camp near Sonamarg in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Al Jazeera reported that police described the assault at Gagangir as a terror attack and said at least two attackers fired indiscriminately at officials and workers linked to a strategic tunnel project. Two people died at the scene and five more later died in hospital, bringing the confirmed death toll to seven. The dead included migrant labourers, a Kashmiri worker and a Kashmiri doctor.
The camp was associated with a major tunnel project intended to connect the Kashmir valley with Ladakh, a region that is cut off for part of the year by snow. The report said the project has military significance because it would improve mobility and operating capacity in an area where India and China have maintained a tense military standoff since 2020. Hundreds of labourers from other parts of India were working on the project when the attack happened.
The shooting also landed in a sensitive political moment. It was the second attack on non-local workers in the region since a local government was sworn in the previous week after the first local elections since New Delhi stripped Kashmir of its semiautonomy in 2019. Police and armed forces launched searches for the attackers, while regional chief minister Omar Abdullah condemned the assault and India's home minister promised a harsh response.
The report placed the attack in the wider context of Kashmir's long-running conflict. India and Pakistan both claim the territory, which they administer in part, and the two nuclear-armed rivals have fought two wars over it.
