Bosnian authorities said a teenage boy killed one police officer and wounded another in a knife attack at a police station in Bosanska Krupa on October 25, 2024, and described the assault as terrorism, AP reported. The suspect, born in 2009, was arrested after the attack.
Police said the teenager entered the station around 9 p.m. on Thursday and carried out what they called a totally unprovoked assault. Chief Prosecutor Merima Mesanovic said investigators were treating the case as a terrorist attack and were checking whether anyone had encouraged the boy or whether any extremist group was involved.
The injured officer was hospitalized and described as stable. Because the suspect is a minor, officials said they could not disclose many details while they continued the investigation. That left the public with a basic account of a deadly attack but not yet a full explanation for how it unfolded or why the station was targeted.
Local police chief Adnan Habibija said officers were shocked that such a young suspect had been able to enter a police station and attack uniformed officers. He called the episode an alarm for society, reflecting the unease that followed the attack in a town about 200 kilometers northwest of Sarajevo.
Authorities raised security measures after the stabbing, and AP reported that video from Bosanska Krupa showed a policeman standing in the street with a rifle. The immediate response suggested that officials were treating the incident not as an isolated act of violence but as a potential signal of wider risk to public institutions.
The case also raised questions about radicalization, youth violence and the vulnerability of local police stations. AP said prosecutors were still determining motive, but the wording they used made clear that the attack had already been framed at the highest level as more than a simple assault, despite the suspect's age and the legal limits that come with handling a minor.
Bosanska Krupa sits some 200 kilometers northwest of Sarajevo, and the attack quickly prompted a visible security response across the town. AP said authorities raised security measures and video from the area showed a policeman standing guard with a rifle, signaling how seriously officials treated the breach of a police station by someone so young.
Because the suspect is a minor, Bosnia's authorities said much of the case would remain sealed while investigators examined motive and possible influence from extremist networks. That left the attack as both a criminal case and a warning about radicalization, youth violence and the vulnerability of institutions that are supposed to symbolize order.
