# Pakistan airstrikes in Afghanistan spark Taliban warning of retaliation
Pakistan carried out air raids in neighboring Afghanistan on 2024-12-24, striking what officials described as hideouts of the Pakistan Taliban, or TTP, in Paktika province. The attacks were reported as the first cross-border strike inside Afghanistan since March and came after a series of assaults attributed to the TTP inside Pakistan.
According to Al Jazeera, security sources said the strikes hit the Barmal district of Afghanistan near Pakistan’s South Waziristan tribal area. Islamabad did not issue an immediate public statement from the foreign ministry or its military media wing, but the Afghan Taliban government confirmed that attacks had taken place.
The Taliban administration, however, said civilians had been targeted. That accusation raised the political temperature around an already volatile border region, where Pakistan has repeatedly accused militants based in Afghanistan of launching attacks across the frontier and where Kabul has rejected Pakistani claims of harboring insurgents.
The timing matters because the strike followed a spate of violence that had intensified pressure on Pakistan’s security apparatus. Pakistan has been battling an increasingly active TTP campaign, and the cross-border raids suggest it was willing to act beyond its own territory to hit suspected militant positions.
