Taylor Swift announced that she had purchased the master recordings of her first six studio albums from private-equity firm Shamrock Capital, giving her ownership of the original recordings for the first time.
Swift said the agreement also covered her music videos, concert films, album artwork and photography, and unreleased songs. Neither Swift nor Shamrock publicly disclosed the price. Billboard cited sources who placed the transaction near the roughly $360 million it said Shamrock had paid for the catalogue, while The Guardian said rumours of a $600 million to $1 billion price were too high. Those estimates were not confirmed deal terms.
The masters had remained with Big Machine Records after Swift signed with the label as a teenager. In 2019, Scott Borchetta sold the label and the six-album catalogue to Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings. Braun sold the recordings to Shamrock in 2020. Swift was not involved in either transaction and had publicly criticised the loss of control over her work.
She responded by recording new versions of the six albums, seeking greater commercial control over how the songs were used and reducing demand for the original masters. Between 2021 and 2023 she released new versions of *Fearless*, *Red*, *Speak Now* and *1989*. Each debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, AP reported.
The self-titled debut and *Reputation* had not received full “Taylor’s Version” releases by May 30. Swift said she had completed a new recording of her debut but had remade less than a quarter of *Reputation*. She left open the possibility that material from both could be released later, now as a celebration rather than an effort to reclaim ownership.
Swift credited fan support for the rerecorded albums and the Eras Tour with enabling the purchase. Shamrock said it was pleased with the outcome, and Braun told Billboard he was happy for her.
The transaction ended the central ownership dispute that had driven Swift’s rerecording campaign. It did not erase the newer versions or guarantee releases of the two remaining projects; it meant that the original masters and associated assets now belonged to Swift alongside the work she had already created under later agreements.
