The broader context was a war that had already entered its fourth year and shown little sign of easing. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict had stalled, and the last direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow had produced only limited prisoner and body exchanges.

The BBC also said the attack came as Zelensky was due to meet Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit, though that meeting was cancelled after Trump left early. The Ukrainian president was expected to attend a dinner at the NATO summit in the Netherlands.
